Mumbai Police Get SMS to Target Drunk Drivers

In perhaps one of the strangest mobile pairings to date, the Indian city of Mumbai, still known to many as Bombay, has been given value added services from provider BPL Mobile, in the form of a solution to assist the police force of the world’s second biggest city to deal with drunk drivers.
Bombay is often associated with extreme poverty, but modern Mumbai is one of the ten biggest commercial cities in the world.
This new found wealth has led to many buying cars and also an upswing in drunk driving.
The local office of IMImobile has created a customised solution for the city’s police that uses BPL Mobile’s network to enable the police to easily grab information from a database, so that officers can track repeat offenders and find information on first time drunk drivers.
With the new system officers can look through criminal records at the scene of the crime, a facility that was not available to them previously.
The main point of the technology will be to target repeat drunk drivers, some of which had previously slipped through the net.
In a public spirited gesture IMImobile have given the service to the police free of charge, and are looking to offer it to other police forces throughout the country.
Another feature of the system is that it can send SMS alerts to all officers regarding the activities of known drunk drivers.
