Texas Instruments, the chip manufacturer, is preparing to release its third-generation OMAP processor in 2008. The OMAP3 mobile phone platform will bring high-definition video to mobile phones.

The technology will provide up to 720×1,368-pixel resolution, which is 720p adapted for phones’ portrait format.

The cameras on the phones will also be able to shoot 12 megapixels of photos per second.

The OMAP3 platform will make it easier to zoom into relevant portions of documents or rotate files such as spread sheets.

As well as enhanced performance in terms of responsiveness, incoming calls will cause less interruption to other functions such as watching a video.

Texas Instruments is also developing a projector, which can be inserted into a phone, which can display high-definition movies on to a flat surface.

OMAP 3 will use an ARM Cortex A8 processor made on the 65-nanometer process.
