High Tech Computer (HTC) have won the contract to manufacture the latest smartphone offering from Palm, the Treo Pro.
The Taiwan-based ODM is renowned for producing high quality smartphones, and recently made a name for itself by releasing a smartphone under its own name - the HTC Touch Diamond.
It is believed HTC’s experience making Windows-based smartphones is the key reason behind them winning the contract to produce the Treo Pro.
Although HTC have won this contract, Inventec Appliances remains Palm’s biggest ODM supplier.
HTC, who also manufacture Sony Ericsson’s X1 smartphone, says it is keeping its eyes firmly focused on its own-brand business despite winning the contract.
The Palm Treo Pro features a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, a Qualcomm 400MHZ processor, Qwerty keyboard and touchscreen.
Connectivity is available through HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS.
Network carriers are not being offered exclusive deals to stock the Treo Pro as it comes unlocked so that international travellers can easily switch sim cards.
It would seem, however, that the mobile technology industry is still in love with the iPhone. Reviewers have written off the Treo Pro as ’shabby’, ‘amateur’ and ‘cheap-looking’.
