Semiconductor manufacturer, Micron Technology, Inc, has designed a Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI) standard-compliant receiver into one of its new mobile imaging sensors. The innovation should help to advance 3G video-phone calling.
The receiver allows the image signal processor (ISP) embedded in the primary camera’s sensor to be repurposed as the ISP engine for the secondary camera. This significantly reduces the cost of the secondary camera.
Secondary cameras are featuring more and more in handsets, to allow users to make 3G video-phone calls.
The MIPI receiver will initially be included on the 1/4-inch, 3-megapixel complete camera system-on-chip sensor, product number MT9T111.
The MT9T111 sensor has industry-leading anti-shake capability to reduce the image blurring that can occur due to camera shake.
The sensor is currently undergoing customer sampling, and mass production is expected to commence in the fourth quarter.
The MIPI receiver interface will also be integrated into some of Micron’s future
mobile phone sensor products.
