Pantech of South Korea has launched its A1407PT handset with ‘bone-conduction’ into the Japanese market.
The technology has been used in headsets but, until now, hasn’t caught on for mobile phones.
Bone conduction technology transmits a sound wave through the skull and to the inner ear by vibration.
Pantech’s A1407PT phone features a bone-conduction speaker on the front of handset which users hold to their head to listen to a call.
The technology is useful to listen to calls in noisy environments, such as construction sites or in heavy traffic. It is also useful for people with an auditory deficit.
The clamshell phone also includes a 2.4-inch QVGA display on the inside and a 96 x 64 display on the flip. It has a 1.3 megapixel camera, 20MB of internal memory, and microSD slot for expansion.
The phone will be available in Japan in November. Price details are not yet available.
