RIM announces Wi-Fi BlackBerry

Research In Motion has announced its first Wi-Fi-enabled smart phone, the BlackBerry 8820.

The new handset is also RIM’s thinnest phone which includes a full QWERTY keyboard. It features a 320×240 display with a QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) reslution, a trackball navigation system, built-in GPS and microSD/microSDHC memory slot.

The BlackBerry 8820 is quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled providing almost global wireless voice and data capabilities.

Full wireless connectivity is provided with support for the 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi standards and WEP, WPA and WPA2 wireless security protocols.

There is also UMA support to allow calls to be seamlessly switched between a wireless carrier cellular network and a Wi-Fi network.

Other features include an enhanced music player, fullscreen video playback capabilities, and stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) support for listening to music on wireless headphones.

Availability and pricing have not yet been released.
