Samsung announces first 8 megapixel CMOS camera sensor

Samsung has announced the world’s first 8-megapixel CMOS camera phone sensor.
Despite the extra pixels, the 10.5 x 11.5 x 9.4-mm sensor is around the same size as current 3 megapixel CMOS modules, making it easy to integrate into current handset designs.
This could help lower the cost of building higher megapixel camera phones, although the higher megapixel sensor will need to be backed up by high-end optics in order to provide better picture quality.
Good quality optics are needed to deliver clear, undistorted light. Without this, no matter how many megapixels the sensor provides, the picture quality will still be disappointing.
Mass production of the sensor is expected to begin in early 2008, with the sensors released by early in the third quarter.
