Nokia announces 6212 smartcard-phone
Nokia’s latest 3G handset, the 6212 Classic, features Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, allowing the phone to communicate directly with other NFC-enabled devices.

NFC technology is a development of RFID technology which combines tag and reader in a single device.

The technology has a range of practical applications. Users of the Nokia 6212 will be able to make payments, and exchange information simply by waving or tapping their phones.

Two NFC handsets can share data simply by being tapped together - for swapping business cards, for example.

The phone could also be waved against an NFC reader to make direct payments, or to receive media such as music.

The phone will also have the ability to act as an ‘electronic wallet’. The 6212’s NFC tag can be loaded with cash or pre-paid ticket credits for public transport.

Other features of the 212 Classic include an FM radio, a 2MP camera and a microSD card expansion slot.

It will be available in late summer in Europe and Asia for around £160.
