Motorola strategy causes CMOS sensor shortage
According to a report in Taiwan’s DigiTimes, there is currently a shortage of CMOS sensors for camera phones, largely caused by Motorola’s efforts to increase shipments in the final quarter of 2007.

The problem has been exacerbated because Micron, a major supplier of CMOS sensors, recently scaled back production in preparation for an anticipated slowdown in demand.

Motorola launched its shipment campaign in an effort to improve sales, following a disappointing year for the company. It is focusing on lower-end handsets and has been aggressively sourcing CMOS image sensors for entry-level VGA class applications.

Micron has been unable to supply all of Motorola’s requirements, causing the manufacturer to turn to other suppliers with a resulting shortage in the marketplace.

The shortage is expected to continue over the Christmas trading period, when demand for CMOS sensors is expected to rise further.
