According to a report from research firm NSR, who specialise in satellite and wireless technology, mobile video services and mobile TV are expected be ten times as popular as they are now by 2013. This will equate to 566 million users.
One company that is hoping to take advantage of this mushrooming audience is Global IP Solutions (GIPS), whose business provides providers IP multimedia processing solutions.
They have just announced that their VideoEngine Mobile on the Windows Mobile platform is now available, which will enable both peer-to-peer video calling and multi-point video conferencing on mobile phones.
GIPS are hoping that the new system will be widely adopted by mobile, wireless carriers, application developers and mobile handset manufacturers.
They claim that the VideoEngine is capable of delivering good quality mobile video even if the signal is not at its best.
GIPS are working with Marvell Technology in a partnership to make use of features on the Marvell chipset to provide high quality visuals.
The chipset is optimised specifically for use with XScale PXA310 devices such as the HP iPAQ or the popular Samsung’s SGH-i780 as well as the GSmart MS808.
They are hoping to shortly make VideoEngine available to users of other devices including Symbian and Apple’s iPhone.
