Nokia 6555 Slim Phone

Permalink: Nokia 6555 Slim Phone by Franz Bicar

nokia-6555-3g-phone.jpgOkay, here is a quick look at one of Nokia’s newer handset (well, not that new really), the Nokia 6555. Its one of the most elegant, stylish phones manufactured by this company as far as I’m concerned. With this phone, Nokia is making its mark on the slim handset market. Admittedly, its a bit bulkier than, say, Samsung’s ultra-thin models, its tall and slender shape gives it a soundly elegant look.

The Nokia 6555 looks so much like your average flip phone, but the only hitch is its peculiar design. It measures 3.92×1.74×0.78 inches, it is tall and slim and quite striking. Its a comfortable and solid handset and has a smooth aerodynamic shape. The 6555 comes in black, silver, red, and brown.

The 6555’s external display measures at 1.25 inches, 128×160 pixels with full support for 262,000 colors. This external display produces very bright colors and works very well as a view finder for self-portraits - making it one of the best external displays for a phone.

The camera lens is located just above the screen, while an external speaker is located below it. All three are surrounded by an attractive, silver band.

The phone’s external controls include a volume rocker that is located on the phone’s left spine. Also on the left spine are the PTT button and the mini-USB port, while the 2.5mm headset and charger jacks rest on the right spine.

The 6555’s internal display is one of this phone’s main highlights. It measures 2 inches (320×240 pixels) and supports 16 million colors. Same as its external display, the internal display produces rich colors and vibrant detail. Photos, graphics, and animations looked great, and there’s a wealth of customization options.

The phone’s keypad and navigation controls are very intuitive and, unlike other phones “slim” phones’ keypads, is very user-friendly and very comfortable to use. The only thing amiss with the 6555 is its microSD card slot placement which is stashed inconveniently behind the battery cover and the battery itself.

Features for the 6555 is impressive. It has high-end features that emphasizes more on music. First, there’s the phone book which can hold 1,000 contacts with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an e-mail address, a company name and job title, a formal name and a nickname, a birthday, a street address, and notes. You can save contacts to groups and pair them with any of 10 polyphonic ringtones for caller ID. You also can assign your friends a photo or a video, and the photos will show up on the external display.

Other features include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, an alarm clock, a calendar, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a timer, and a stopwatch. You’ll also find a selection of higher-end offerings, including a voice memo recorder; a unit converter; a world clock; voice commands and dialing; a speakerphone; PC syncing; POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail; AOL, Yahoo, and ICQ instant messaging; Bluetooth 2.0. USB mass storage.

As with most Nokia phone, the 6555’s music player has a minimalistic design but features functions such as repeat mode, an equalizer, stereo widening, and a flight mode for listening to music while aloft. Among the other music offerings are a music ID tool, XM satellite radio, MobiRadio and Billboard Mobile applications, and a selection of community services for connecting to other music fans. What’s lacking with this phone is an FM radio.

The Nokia 6555 also comes in with a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera. This is very surprising as most phones at this level comes in with a higher megapixel level. But still, the 6555’s camera takes photos in five resolutions, from 1,280×1,024 down to 160×120. Editing options include three quality settings, four color effects, a night mode, brightness and white-balance settings, a self-timer, a multishot option, and a digital zoom.

Photo qualities, however, are very disappointing. Though colors were natural, the images were dim with visible splotches and lines.

The camera can also serve as a camcorder which shoots clips with sound in two resolutions (176×155 and 128×96) and a set of editing options similar to the still camera’s.

Photos and videos can be kept with the 6555’s 30MB of internal memory and additional support for external flash memory (microSD slot). The phone’s memory-card slot accommodates cards as large as 4GB.

You can personalize the 6555 with a variety of color themes, wallpapers, animations, and alert sounds.

The Nokia 6555 has a rated battery life of six hours talk time and 9.5 days standby time.
