Samsung Electronics is developing a chip for smartphones and navigation devices which combines a 667MHz Arm processor with hardware video acceleration to speed up graphics.
The S3C6410 chip is manufactured with a 65-nanometer process. It provides hardware support for H.264, MPEG4 and other codecs.
The chip has sufficient power to record and play VGA-res video at the same time, allowing higher-quality video conferencing with less drain on the battery.
Samsung will demonstrate the S3C6410 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and will make samples available to device manufacturers in May. It expects to commence volume shipments in the third quarter.
The chip supports a range of smart phone operating systems, including Symbian, Windows Mobile and Linux and is compatible with a range of memory types including DRAM and flash.
The price of the new chip has not been disclosed.
