Omnivision Launches TrueFocus Camera At 3GSM
Permalink: Omnivision Launches TrueFocus Camera At 3GSM by Jan Harris

At the 3GSM conference in Barcelona, OmniVision, the semiconductor imaging company, launched a 3 mega pixel camera phone lens which doesn’t need focusing before a picture is taken.
The TrueFocus camera, which uses Wavefront Coding technology, allows the user to snap a photo instantly without having to wait for the lens to focus and perhaps missing a photo opportunity. The camera tidies up the image later and makes sure it is in focus.
The product effectively targets the mobile handset market, as it is small; durable; easy to manufacture and integrate into existing handset ranges; and cost-competitive. The lens has no moving parts and is therefore less likely to malfunction than traditional lenses.
Wavefront Coding is a method of optically encoding light to form an immediate images and then using digital processing to decode the image and create a final image that is in focus across the whole picture.
