Apple third largest smartphone maker
According to research firm Gartner Apple is now the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, behind Nokia in first place with a 45.2% market share and Research in Motion (RIM) in second place with a 13.4% market share. Apple holds a 5.3% share of the market

The world market for Smartphones is rising with 32.2 million units sold in the first quarter of 2008, a 29% increase from the 2007 same period.

In the US market, which more than doubled in size with 7.3 million units sold, Apple came in second.

While Nokia grew 25% and RIM achieved over 100% growth, Apple remained static. This was due to a number of factors including iPhone shortages in the first quarter.
