Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phones are one of the best music phone out in the market. It’s the ideal partner for music aficionados who love to take their songs everywhere they go. The W580i is one of the latest Walkman phones released by Sony Ericsson. It is a sleek and solidly built music phone that fans of the Sony Ericsson handset will surely love.
First, let’s look at the phone’s design. As mentioned, it is has a slim design measuring only 99 by 47 by 14mm and weighing just 94 grams. Its selling point, of course, is its built-in MP3 Player. Then you also have an FM Radio, and a pedometer, which, if you don’t know, counts your steps when you walk.
Its 240 by 320 pixel Clear TFT screen displays 262K colors and is pretty good same as other Sony Ericsson phones out there. It even has a 2-megapixel camera and can record both stills and video with a variety of shooting modes. Shooting modes for the W580i’s camera includes a night mode, blogging, panorama, sepia and black and white effects, minus a flash. White balance and picture quality is, to an extent, adjustable.
The W580i is a bit odd for me. Sony Ericsson usually makes candy-bar type phones. However, the W580i is a slider which in effect, detracts usability, especially with its keypad. The keypad is set in and can be difficult to press keys with larger fingers.
As mentioned, the W580i’s main selling point is its MP3 Player. It is described as a portable MP3 player, but aside from that, it also has a camera, a camcorder, a radio tuner, a pedometer and a mobile web browser. It supports quad-band GSM and EDGE networks.
Like many of the latest Sony Ericsson phones, Java games and applications, blogs, RSS feeds and music recognition are available on the W580i as well as the standard organizer applications including calculator, alarm clock, calendar, notes, phone book, flight mode, stopwatch and timer.
As far as its performance is concern, the W580i is actually pretty good. Its battery life is standard with approximately nine hours talk time and 370 hours standby time. Call quality is fairly good, and talking on the slider phone is quite comfortable whether the phone is open or close.
The 2-megapixel camera and clear screen provided good picture quality. Having the camera integrated in the slide allows the lens to be protected. Unlike other Sony Ericsson phones, the W580i is usually held in portrait orientation as opposed to switching to the landscape position when taking a photo.
As a music player, the phone has really good sound quality. Although having it on loudspeaker is not advisable as it sounds a bit distorted, listening through headphones however, let’s you have a really good music player in your hands.
The Sony Ericsson W580i Walkman phone continues its strong position in music. It offers a lot of small and cool features. If you listen to music frequently on your phone, this is a great choice at an entry to mid-tier price range. he 2 megapixel camera takes great photos and the M2 slot is very handy to store photos and music tracks.
