According to a study carried out by optical component specialists Schneider Kreuznach, there is a growing trend to replace digital cameras with camera phones.

The company interviewed around 1,000 people in Germany, China, India, and the U.S.A. about their usage of digital cameras and cell phones to take photographs.

Around 25% of respondents said that in future they would exclusively use cell phones for picture-taking, as long as the quality was good enough - around that currently provided by upper to mid-range digital cameras with approximately 6 million pixels.

Under certain circumstances, 43% would be willing to replace their digital camera with a suitable cell phone.

Nearly 80% of respondents from India and China said that they could envisage using only cell phones for picture-taking in future.

In India, 60% of respondents said they already took pictures with their cell phones several times a week, compared with 52% in China, 26% in the USA and only 12% in Germany.

In all four countries unsatisfactory image quality was cited as the main reason for not using a cell phone camera.

Cell phone manufacturers are addressing this problem with the development of higher-resolution sensors and more powerful lens systems.
