OmniVision Technologies Inc has launched the OV2650, its third generation 2-megapixel CameraChip sensor.

The sensor features OmniPixel3 technology, and brings the performance of digital still cameras (DSC) to the camera phone market.

The OV2650 comes in a 1/5-inch optical format, which is compact enough to allow existing 1.3-megapixel and VGA camera phone designs to be easily upgraded.

The sensor combines OmniVision’s proprietary 1.75-micron OmniPixel3 technology with advanced image signal processing (ISP). This provides excellent performance in low-light conditions (520mV/lux-sec).

It also provides top-class colour reproduction and ultra-low noise. Other features include anti-shake technology, high dynamic range (HDR) for advanced video functionality (85dB); a high-speed mobile industry processor interface (MIPI) to allow pictures to be easily shared and a high-end ISP to provide performance of digital still camera quality.

The OV2650 sensor is available for sampling and is scheduled for volume production in the first quarter of calendar 2008.
