OmniVision ships 1/10-inch OV7680 VGA camera chip

OmniVision Technologies Inc has started shipping volume production quantities of its OV7680 1/10-inch VGA CameraChip sensor.

The OV7680 is a cost-effective, ultra-thin camera module, suitable for entry-level camera phones and for secondary cameras in 3G handsets.

The sensor is built with unique non-linear micro-lens shift technology. This reduces the distance between the sensor and the lens and enables the height of the camera module to be reduced to just 2.5 mm.

It enables an overall module size of just 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 mm without compromising image quality or performance.

The OV7680 can operate at 30 frames per second in VGA resolution. It is, therefore ideal for video conferencing.

The new VGA image sensor features a 2.2-micron pixel size built on OmniPixel2 technology. This provides maximum sensitivity and gives excellent performance in low light conditions.
