Varioptic has launched the first liquid lens auto focus camera module – AFCM MI285.

The module was developed using Varioptic’s latest auto focus 7.75mm liquid lens – Arctic 416. This allows one of the smallest footprints (8.5 mm) for a 2MP camera module and is ideal for current camera phone designs.

The liquid lens does not include any moving parts and has many advantages over traditional auto-focus technologies in terms of size, robustness, speed, price and power consumption.

The AFCM MI285 camera module is manufactured by one of Varioptic’s leading Asian partners. The Arctic 416 lenses are manufactured in Wuxi (China) by Creative Sensor Inc. In volumes of 50,000 units, the MI285 camera module costs only $16.

Varioptic is working with handset companies to incorporate the module into a mobile phone. The first camera phone to incorporate the module should be announced this year.

Varioptic will demonstrate the AFCM MI285 at 3GSM in Barcelona from 12th to 15th February (stand 2F33, Hall 2).
